About this glass room
The brief
A traditional stone house in Leeds with a paved terrace at the back. The owners wanted somewhere to relax and entertain outdoors that would not be ruled by the weather – a garden lounge rather than a conservatory, with as much glass and as little frame as possible.
What we built
A 4.5 × 3 m glass room in anthracite aluminium (RAL 7016) with a clear toughened-glass roof and sliding glass walls on all three open sides. The frame keeps the view of the garden uninterrupted, and because every wall slides open, the room can be fully open, fully closed or anything in between.
The details
The frame is fixed to the stone wall of the house and sits on the existing paving. Full-height glass walls give shelter from wind and rain while letting in all the light, so the room stays bright even on a dull Yorkshire afternoon. Furnished with a sofa, a coffee table and a wall-mounted television, it has become a proper outdoor living room.
The result
A comfortable, light-filled space that turns the terrace into a garden lounge for every season.
