The brief

A family home in Bradford with a generous raised deck across the back of the house, used for outdoor dining and barbecues. The owners wanted to cover the whole deck so it could be used in all weathers, without shutting out the light from the kitchen and living room behind.

What we built

A 6 × 3.5 m glass veranda with an anthracite aluminium frame (RAL 7016) and a clear toughened-glass roof. The roof spans the full width of the deck and is carried on three posts at the front edge, so the space underneath stays open and uncluttered. The anthracite finish ties in with the dark fencing and the house’s rainwater goods.

The details

The frame is anchored to the house wall above the doors. Integrated guttering collects rainwater along the front beam. Sliding glass walls can be added to any side later if the owners want to turn the veranda into a fully enclosed glass room.

The result

A large, dry, bright entertaining area that makes the deck usable whatever the weather.
