Glass room in Birmingham
7 × 3 m

The brief

A modern rendered home in Birmingham with a long patio running along the side and back of the house. The owners wanted to make the most of that length – a space big enough for a dining table at one end and a lounge area at the other, protected from wind and rain but still open to the garden.

What we built

A 7 × 3 m glass room in anthracite aluminium (RAL 7016) with a clear toughened-glass roof and sliding glass walls along the full length. Seven metres is a long span, so the roof is carried on additional posts along the front. The anthracite frame matches the dark windows of the house.

The details

The room is built on the existing porcelain patio and fixed to the house wall. With the glass walls closed it is a calm, sheltered space for the dining table and sofas; with them open it becomes a long covered terrace facing the garden.

The result

An outdoor room that adds a dining room and a lounge to the house – and shows how far a glass room can go on a larger plot in the West Midlands.
