The brief

The owners of this home in Accrington had a beautifully kept timber deck and wanted to enjoy it in any weather. They wanted shelter without losing the view or the light, so a solid-roofed extension was never on the table. A glass room was the natural answer.

What we built

A 5 × 3.5 m glass room with a white aluminium frame (RAL 9003), a fully glazed solar-control roof and sliding glass walls along the front. On warm days the front slides fully open and the deck becomes part of the garden again; when the rain comes, the room stays dry and bright. Dimmable LED lighting is built into the roof beams, so the space works from early breakfast to a late dinner.

Installation

Building on a deck needs a little extra care. We cut neat openings in the boards, anchored the posts around half a metre below deck level for a solid footing, then trimmed and sealed the timber around each base so the deck looks exactly as it did before. From order to installation took around seven weeks.

The result

The deck is now the most-used spot in the house – breakfast, reading, dinners with friends – and because every wall is glass, it never feels like a box. A good example of what a white glass room can do for a modern home in Lancashire.
